22cm, 24cm or 26cm — which one fits your sink and your cooking?
There is no bad choice here, only a mismatch between the size and the size of the pot you usually drain. Work backwards from your biggest regular meal, not your smallest.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| 22cm | You cook for one or two, you have a small or divided sink, and your cupboard space is already a negotiation. |
| 24cm | Weeknight dinner for a family, a standard pot of pasta, and you want to wash a full head of lettuce without doing it in two goes. |
| 26cm | You cook in bulk, drain big pots, or rinse produce by the bagful. You have the sink and the shelf to carry it. |
Undersized is the mistake people actually make — pasta going over the rim and into the drain is a memorable way to learn it.
Will stainless steel spot, rust or scratch the sink?
Water marks are the only thing steel really does, and they come from letting it air-dry. Everything else is about not attacking the finish.
| Works on | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Hot soapy water and a soft sponge | Steel wool and scouring powders, which leave permanent swirls |
| Draining boiling water straight from the pot | Leaving it sitting full of salted or acidic water overnight |
| Rinsing berries, greens, rice, beans and shellfish | Bleach-based cleaners left to sit on the surface |
The step people skip: towelling it dry. Thirty seconds with a cloth is the difference between steel that stays bright and steel covered in the chalky ghost of your tap water.
Rinse, drain and mix without three separate bowls in the sink.
The plastic colander is always the worst thing in the cupboard. It has gone slightly orange from tomato sauce, it warped the day someone poured boiling pasta water through it too fast, and it holds a permanent faint smell of whatever was drained in it last. And yet it stays, because replacing a colander is nobody's priority until the moment they are standing over the sink resenting it.
Stainless steel just does not do any of that. Boiling water is a non-event, tomato and turmeric rinse off, and the thing looks the same in year three as it did on day one.

Why steel is the material that decides this
A colander takes more thermal abuse than almost anything else in a kitchen. You pour water at boiling point through it, then immediately hit it with cold from the tap. Plastic answers that by going soft and out of round, which is why old colanders rock on the counter. Steel does not flex at those temperatures, so the rim stays true and it sits flat every time.
The perforations matter as much as the metal. Punched steel holes have clean edges that let water leave fast without grabbing at grains of rice or shreds of herb the way a moulded plastic hole does. Fast drainage is why pasta comes out of it dry enough to sauce properly instead of sitting in a puddle.
The three sizes, in kitchen terms
- 22cm — the everyday small job. Rinsing a punnet of berries, draining a tin of chickpeas, washing herbs. Fits a half-sink and stores in a normal cupboard without a fight.
- 24cm — the default. A family pot of pasta, a whole lettuce, potatoes for four. If you only want one size in the house, this is usually it.
- 26cm — the batch-cook size. Draining a big stockpot, washing produce for the week, rinsing rice by the kilo.
