    Which size fits your table?

Measure the tabletop, not the room, and add roughly 8 to 12 inches to each direction for the drop over the edge. Every size here is 55 inches across, so the only real decision is how long your table is — and whether you ever pull the extension leaf out.

Choose If this sounds like you
55"×55" A square table, a small round one, or an apartment two-seater pushed against the wall. Also the one people use on a side console.
55"×71" The standard four-seater most rentals come with. Two along each side, nobody fighting for elbow room.
55"×87" Six seats, and the table where homework happens on weekdays and dinner happens on Sundays.
55"×94" A long eight-seater, or a six-seater with the leaf permanently in because someone always stays for dessert.

If you land exactly between two sizes, size up. A short cloth looks like a mistake; a long one just looks like a longer drop.

Will it sit flat, or fold-creased forever?

Every tablecloth arrives folded, and the creases are the first thing you will notice. They settle, but how fast depends on what you do in the first hour.

    Works on Avoid
Timber, laminate and painted dining tables where you want to hide a scratched top. Using it as heat protection under a hot dish — put a trivet down the way you would on bare wood.
Rectangular, square and round tops — a round table takes the corners as a soft drape. Glass tabletops with sharp unfinished edges, which will chew at the drop over time.
Outdoor tables for an afternoon, brought back in before the dew. Leaving it folded in the linen cupboard between uses — that is where creases become permanent.

Unfold it onto the table, centre it by eye from one end, and let it hang for a couple of hours before you set anything on it. The step people skip: storing it draped over a hanger or rolled instead of folded along the same four lines every time.

The table stops being furniture and starts being where you eat.

An uncovered dining table is a surface you are always slightly guarding. Somebody's glass leaves a ring, the keys get dumped near the fruit bowl, and there is a permanent tally of scratches from the one time you cut something without a board. Laying a cloth over it does something disproportionate to the effort involved: the marks go away, the noise of plates goes down, and the table reads as set even when there is nothing on it but a candle and yesterday's newspaper.

Why the drop is the part that decides how it looks

The difference between a tablecloth that looks intentional and one that looks borrowed is almost entirely the overhang. Too little and it sits on the top like a placemat that got out of hand, with the table edge showing through at the corners. Too much and it pools in people's laps and gets pulled off by the first person who stands up quickly. Somewhere around a hand's width of drop on each side is the range where the cloth softens the edge of the table, hides the legs' junction, and still leaves chairs able to tuck in. That is why the sizing above works off your tabletop measurement rather than how many people you seat — two six-seaters can be a foot apart in length.

    The four sizes, in practice

    • 55"×55" — square. Best on a round table, where the four corners fall into soft points, or on a small square top in a galley kitchen.
    • 55"×71" — the everyday four-seater size. Enough drop to look dressed, not so much that a toddler can grab a fistful.
    • 55"×87" — six seats with room for a board in the middle. The size most family tables actually need.
    • 55"×94" — the long one. For extended tables and for the kind of dinner that runs past the point where anyone is still eating.
