How long should the runner be?
Measure your table length and pick the runner that overhangs by 6 to 12 inches at each end. A runner that stops flush with the table edge looks like a mistake; one that pools on the floor looks like a curtain.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| Small (12"×71") | A four-seater kitchen table, a sideboard, or a hall console you want to dress without covering entirely. |
| Medium (12"×94") | The six-seater most dining rooms have. This is the size to default to if you're guessing. |
| Large (12"×102") | A long table, an extended table you leave extended, or a kitchen island you want a line of color down. |
All three are 12" wide, which leaves room for place settings on both sides of a standard table without anyone eating off the runner.
How do I keep embroidery looking sharp?
Embroidered daisies are raised stitching, and raised stitching hates two things: snagging and a hot iron pressed straight onto it. Everything else about the care is ordinary.
| Works on | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Cool gentle machine wash, ideally with other flat linens | Washing with zips, hooks or anything that can catch a stitch and pull a daisy out of shape |
| Ironing face down on a towel, so the embroidery sinks in rather than being crushed | Running a hot iron directly over the daisies, which flattens and glazes the thread |
| Rinsing spills cold, straight away, at the sink | Bleach, which lifts color from embroidery thread faster than from the base cloth |
The step people skip: ironing it face down. Thirty seconds of thought and the embroidery keeps its dimension instead of coming out looking printed.
A bare table becomes a set table without you owning a single matching thing.
A full tablecloth is a commitment — it covers the wood you paid for, it needs washing after every meal, and it turns the table into an occasion. A runner does most of the same work for a fraction of the effort. It gives the table a centre line, it protects the middle where the serving dishes go, and it leaves the timber visible at both sides, which is usually the whole reason you bought a wooden table.

Embroidery is why this doesn't look flat
A printed daisy runner is a photograph of texture. Embroidered daisies are texture — thread standing proud of the cloth, catching light on one side and casting a shadow on the other. On a table, where everyone is looking down at the surface from two feet away under a pendant light, that difference is obvious. It's also the reason the runner still reads as decorative when there's nothing on the table at all.
Stitching holds up better than print, too. Print sits on the fibre and wears off it; embroidery is locked through the cloth, so it survives being washed, folded, spilled on and washed again. The daisies fade at the same rate as the fabric around them rather than going patchy first.
Where each length goes
- Small (12"×71") — the versatile one. Fits a compact dining table, and if you retire it from the table it works on a sideboard or a chest of drawers with a lamp and a bowl on it.
- Medium (12"×94") — the standard dining runner, with a proper drop at both ends. This is the one that makes a six-seater look styled rather than merely occupied.
- Large (12"×102") — for long tables and islands. The extra length keeps the proportion right on a table where a shorter runner would look like a stripe stranded in the middle.
