What size should I get for winter?

For a winter blanket, err larger — the whole point is that nothing is sticking out. Cold feet at the bottom of a blanket that stops two inches short is a specific and annoying problem.

Choose If this sounds like you
39"×59" A reading chair, a car boot, or a child's bed. Small enough to keep folded on a shelf without dominating it.
59"×79" One adult on the sofa, fully covered, with enough left over to tuck around your feet.
71"×79" Two people who both pull, or an extra layer over a double bed on the coldest nights.
79"×91" A proper top layer for a larger bed — covers the sides rather than lying like a runner down the middle.

If it's replacing the blanket two people currently fight over, the fight is a sizing message.

Will the embossed grid flatten out?

The grid is pressed into the surface, and pressed textures are undone by exactly one thing: heat. Wash it cool, dry it low, and the pattern stays legible for the life of the blanket.

    Works on Avoid
Cold or cool gentle cycle, on its own Hot washes, which relax the embossing out of the surface
Low tumble, or drying flat A hot dryer, and ironing it — an iron will flatten the grid in one pass
Mild detergent Fabric softener, which coats the raised sections and dulls the definition

The step people skip: shaking it out hard before it dries. Ten good snaps opens the grid back up, and it comes out looking pressed rather than crushed.

The blanket you get out in October and don't put away until March.

Winter in a house with average heating comes down to a nightly negotiation: turn the thermostat up for one person sitting in one room, or find something to put over your legs. A blanket with real substance settles it. This one is built for the cold half of the year specifically — enough weight to feel like cover, not so much that it's a chore to pull off when you get up.

What the embossed grid is actually for

The grid isn't only decoration. Pressing a pattern into the face of the fabric creates raised ridges and recessed channels, and those channels hold still air against you — which is what warmth is. A perfectly flat blanket of the same thickness conducts heat away faster because there's nothing between you and the surface but contact.

The grid also does something for how the blanket looks in a room. A plain slab of color over a sofa is a big flat rectangle. A grid catches light along the raised lines and shadow in the channels, so it reads as texture from across the room and the color looks deeper than it is. That's the difference between a blanket that looks like bedding and one that looks like it belongs in the living room.

    The seven colors

    • Mocha Grid — warm mid-brown. The safest of the warm tones on a sofa that gets daily use.
    • Steel Blue — cool and slightly muted. The one for a room with white walls and dark timber.
    • Ash Grey — light neutral grey. Disappears into most furniture and lets the grid do all the work.
    • Ivory Cream — the palest option. Best over a bed rather than the sofa the dog uses.
    • Beige Mocha — softer and sandier than Mocha Grid, and the easiest of the browns to pair with existing cushions.
    • Charcoal Grey — near-black. Anchors a light room, and the most forgiving color in the whole range.
    • Olive Green — the only real color here. Choose it if everything you own is already grey and you've noticed.
