Which size matches my sofa?
Measure the seat across, not the whole sofa — arms add a foot at each end and are the reason people order one size too small. Six sizes, and they land in four groups.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| 35"×59" | You want a throw over the back of a chair or across one corner of a sofa for looks, not full coverage. Also the one for an ottoman or a bench. |
| 51"×63" | An armchair or recliner you want properly covered — seat, back and a drop over the front edge where shoes and pets do the damage. |
| 63"×87" or 63"×102" | A two-seater or a standard three-seater. Take the 87" for a loveseat, the 102" for a full-length sofa where you want the tassels clear of the arms. |
| 71"×91" or 71"×134" | A deep-seated sofa where the 63" widths won't reach the back cushions, or a long sectional run that needs the 134" to cover in one piece. |
If you're between two, go up. Extra length tucks into the back of the seat and holds the cover in place; a short one rides up the first time someone sits down.
Will it slide off the sofa every time someone gets up?
Slipping is about how you lay it, not about the cloth. A cover thrown flat over cushions has nothing holding it; a cover tucked into the seat crease stays put through an evening of people getting up for the kettle.
| Works on | Harder work |
|---|---|
| Fabric sofas with a defined crease between seat and back to tuck into | Smooth leather with a single fixed cushion — nothing to tuck into, so it will shift |
| Loose-cushion sofas, where you can lift a cushion and trap the edge underneath | Deep-buttoned or heavily sloped backs, where the drape wants to slide forward |
| Covering a sofa that's already a bit worn, where a soft drape reads as deliberate | Expecting it to sit like a fitted slipcover — it's a cover you drape, not one you zip on |
The step people skip: pushing the excess down into the seat crease with a flat hand, all the way along, before smoothing the top. Do that and it holds. Lay it flat and admire it instead, and it'll be on the floor by the second ad break.
A sofa that's seen better days stops being the first thing you notice about the room.
Sofas wear out from the top down. The frame is usually fine for another decade, but the seat fabric goes shiny where people sit, the arms get grubby where hands land, and one cushion fades because it's nearest the window. None of that is worth replacing a sofa over, and all of it is visible from the doorway. A cover is the cheap fix that doesn't look like a cheap fix — particularly one with a pattern strong enough to be the thing you look at instead.

Why palm leaves work where a plain cover doesn't
A plain sofa cover has one job and it usually fails at it: every crease, every ripple and every place it doesn't quite sit flat is visible against a solid color. That's why plain covers look like a sheet over furniture. A large-scale leaf pattern breaks the surface up, so the eye reads pattern rather than wrinkles. It's the same reason patterned carpet hides more than plain carpet, and it's the single biggest factor in whether a draped cover looks intentional.
The tassel edge does the rest. It gives the front edge of the sofa a defined line where the cover falls, rather than a raw hem that reads as unfinished. And because both the pattern and the fringe are doing visual work, the cover reads as a decision about the room instead of an admission about the sofa.
- 35"×59" — decorative scale. Chair backs, ottomans, benches, or one corner of a larger sofa.
- 51"×63" — armchair coverage, seat to back with a drop over the front edge.
- 63"×87" — loveseat and two-seater length, tassels hanging clear at each end.
- 63"×102" — the standard three-seater size, and the one most people are looking for.
- 71"×91" — the extra width for deep-seated sofas where a 63" cover won't reach the back cushions.
- 71"×134" — the long run, for sectionals and oversized sofas you want covered in one piece rather than two.
