Which size fits my table?
Measure your tabletop, then pick the size that adds about 8" to 12" in each direction — that gives you a drop that sits on a lap without landing in it. Every size is 55" across, so the width suits a standard dining table; the length is the choice.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| 55"×55" | A square table, a small round one, or a card-table-sized kitchen table for two to four. Also the one for a garden table you dress occasionally. |
| 55"×71" | The everyday four-seater in a kitchen or a small dining room, where a longer cloth would drag on the chairs at each end. |
| 55"×87" | A six-seater. The most common dining table in most houses, and the size most people end up ordering. |
| 55"×102" | A long eight-seater, or a table you extend for Christmas and birthdays and want covered when it's open. |
If your table extends, buy for the extended length. A cloth folded back on a shorter table looks fine; a cloth that doesn't reach does not.
Linen creases. Is that going to drive me mad?
It creases, and that is the look — but there's a difference between soft linen fall and packing wrinkles. Handle it right on day one and you'll never need to iron it again.
| Works well | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Cold or cool machine wash on a gentle cycle | Hot washes, which shrink linen and set the creases hard |
| Hanging it damp over the table itself, or over a rail, and letting gravity pull it out | Leaving it balled up in the machine after the cycle finishes |
| A warm iron on the reverse while it's still slightly damp, if you want it crisp | Bleach on the floral pattern, and fabric softener anywhere near it |
The step people skip: getting it out of the machine straight away. Damp linen left sitting sets creases that no iron fully removes. Take it out, shake it, hang it — thirty seconds of work.
The table stops being furniture and starts being where dinner happens.
A bare dining table is honest but cold. It shows every ring, every crumb and every scratch, and it never quite signals that a meal is about to happen — it just sits there being a surface. Putting a cloth on it changes the room before you've cooked anything. Plates land quietly, the light off the window stops bouncing straight back at you, and the table reads as set rather than merely clear. The ornate floral pattern means you don't need a centrepiece to make it look considered.

Linen behaves differently to cotton, and that's the point
Linen has more body than cotton. Instead of clinging to the table edge and hanging limp, it breaks into a defined fold at the corner and holds the line — which is why a linen cloth looks structured while a thin cotton one looks like a sheet. It's also considerably more absorbent, so a knocked glass of water soaks in and blots out rather than running to the edge and into someone's lap.
The trade is creasing. Linen creases because the fibre is stiff and doesn't spring back, and no amount of finishing changes that. Over time this works in your favour: the cloth softens with every wash, the fold lines relax, and it starts falling in the loose way that people actually buy linen for. A linen tablecloth on its tenth outing looks better than on its first, which is the opposite of most things you put on a table.
- 55"×55" — square. Small square and round tables, and the size to reach for on a balcony or garden table.
- 55"×71" — the compact rectangle. A four-seater kitchen table with a short, tidy drop at each end.
- 55"×87" — the standard six-seater length, with enough overhang that the cloth falls rather than stops.
- 55"×102" — the long one, for eight-seaters and extended tables at the times of year you actually use all the chairs.
