Which length do I need for my table?
Measure the tabletop, then add roughly 12" so the runner drops over each end — that overhang is what makes it look finished rather than cut short. All three are 12" wide; the only variable is how far it travels.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| 12"×33" | You're dressing a console in the hallway, a chest of drawers, a coffee table, or running it crossways over a dining table instead of lengthways. |
| 12"×94" | Standard six-seater dining table, the one you eat at every night. This is the length most people are after. |
| 12"×108" | A long eight-seater, an extended table you leave open, or a kitchen island you want covered end to end. |
Between two sizes? Go longer. A runner that hangs slightly too far reads as generous; one that stops short of the ends reads as a mistake.
Lace edging near food and candles — is that asking for trouble?
Not if you know what the lace border can and can't take. The open edge is the pretty part and the vulnerable part, so it's worth two minutes of thought before the first dinner.
| Works on | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Sealed or lacquered timber, glass, painted sideboards, laminate | Rough sawn or splintered wood, which catches the open lace and pulls threads |
| Cool decor — vases, bowls, unlit candle displays, table settings | Hot pans straight from the stove; use a trivet on top rather than the runner as one |
| Everyday dining, with spills blotted rather than rubbed | Scrubbing a stain out of the lace border — it distorts the openwork |
Wash it cold on gentle, ideally in a mesh bag so the lace edge isn't dragged against a zip. The step people skip: laying it flat and squaring the corners while damp. Do that and it presses in seconds. Skip it and the border dries wavy.
A bare dining table stops looking bare the moment something runs down the middle of it.
An empty table is the piece of furniture that most makes a room look unfinished — a big flat expanse with nothing happening on it, waiting to accumulate car keys and unopened post. A runner solves it faster than anything else you can buy, because it gives the table a centre line. Everything you then put down — a bowl, a candle, a stack of plates — lands on it and looks arranged rather than abandoned. The Ornate Blossom pattern does the decorating; the lace border does the finishing.

The lace edge is the part that decides whether it looks cheap
Most inexpensive runners are a rectangle of patterned cloth with a machine hem — a hard line stopped abruptly. That hard line is what makes a table look like it's wearing a placemat. An openwork lace border does the opposite: it softens the boundary between cloth and table, letting the timber show through the edge so the runner appears to sit into the surface rather than on it. It's also the reason the runner still works when the table is otherwise empty, since there's something to look at even without a centrepiece.
The blossom pattern is worked at a scale that survives being covered. Put a bowl in the middle and a candle at each end and you still see the motif on the exposed sections — which is not true of large-scale designs, where covering the centre leaves you with two meaningless fragments.
- 12"×33" — short. Console tables, hall chests, coffee tables, or laid crossways as a wide placemat for two.
- 12"×94" — the standard dining length. Runs the length of a six-seater with the lace ends hanging clear at both ends.
- 12"×108" — the long one. Eight-seaters, extended tables, and kitchen islands where a shorter runner leaves an awkward gap.

What You're Getting
