Four pieces or five?
Neither is the "better" set — the question is how many people cook in your kitchen at once. One person making dinner reaches for two utensils. Two people cooking, or one person cooking three things, runs out.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| 4 Piece Set | One or two of you, weeknight cooking, one pan on the go. Also the right size for a small kitchen where the utensil pot is already overflowing. |
| 5 Piece Set | A family kitchen, or you are replacing a drawer full of scratched plastic in one go and want a spare in the pot when one is in the sink. |
If you are buying these because you just bought a non-stick pan, get the larger set — the whole point is that no metal utensil ever goes near it again.
Do wooden utensils crack, stain and go furry?
Only if you wash them the way you wash everything else. Wood needs about ninety seconds of different treatment and then it outlasts plastic by years.
| Works on | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Non-stick, ceramic-coated and enamelled pans — wood cannot scratch any of them. | Leaving one resting in a hot pan while you do something else. That is how you get a scorched flat spot. |
| A quick hand wash in warm soapy water, rinsed and stood upright to dry. | Soaking them in the sink overnight. Wood drinks the water, swells, and dries out cracked. |
| A wipe of any food-safe oil every few months to keep the grain sealed. | Bleach, which strips the surface and leaves it rough and thirsty. |
The step everyone skips is standing them up to dry rather than laying them in a rack. Water pools along the flat of a spatula head; upright, it runs off in a minute and the wood never gets the chance to swell.
The scratched pan wasn't the pan's fault.
Everybody has done it. You buy a decent non-stick pan, you use it carefully for a month, and then one night you are in a hurry and you grab the metal turner because it is the one on top. Six weeks later the coating has a grey scar across the middle and eggs stick to that one spot forever. Meanwhile the drawer is full of the plastic ones that half-melted against a hot rim and now have a permanent brown warp. Wooden tools fix both problems by simply not being hard enough to scratch and not being soft enough to melt.

Wood is softer than the coating, and that is the entire mechanism
Non-stick surfaces do not wear out on their own — they get cut. Anything harder than the coating leaves a channel, food catches in the channel, and the pan is finished. Wood is softer than every pan surface in a normal kitchen, so it physically cannot do that damage no matter how hard you scrape at a stuck-on bit. It also does not conduct heat the way metal does, which means the handle stays cool enough to hold when the head has been sitting in a hot pan, and there is no metal-on-metal shriek every time you turn something.
The other thing worth knowing: wood does not hold onto flavour or smell the way scratched plastic does. A plastic spoon that has stirred curry stays a curry spoon. Rinsed and dried properly, these do not carry anything over.
Which set to put in the pot
- 4 Piece Set — the everyday complement. Enough to cook a full meal without washing anything mid-way, and small enough that the utensil pot still shuts a drawer or sits neatly by the hob.
- 5 Piece Set — the replacement set. Buy this one if the plan is to throw out the melted plastic entirely, or if two people are usually cooking and one of them always has the good spatula.
