Olive, Crimson or Teal — which one suits my sofa?

There is no safe neutral here, so pick the one that argues least with what is already in the room. All three carry the same mandala and the same tasselled edge; the color decides whether the throw sits back or takes over.

Choose If this sounds like you
Olive Your room already leans earthy — wood, rattan, plants, a beige or grey sofa. This is the one that adds pattern without adding an argument, and the one to pick if someone else in the house has opinions.
Crimson You want the sofa to be the thing people notice. Works against cream, charcoal and dark wood, and it is the one that makes a plain living room look like autumn on purpose.
Teal Your palette runs cool — navy, slate, white walls, brass or chrome. Teal picks that up rather than fighting it, and it reads far richer under lamplight than it does in daylight.

A throw on the sofa and one folded at the end of the bed are two different jobs — people rarely stop at one color.

Do the tassels survive the washing machine?

Yes, if you treat the fringe as the fragile part — which it is — and stop the machine from tangling it.

    Works Avoid
Cold gentle cycle, washed on its own, ideally with the throw loosely folded rather than screwed into a ball. Line dry or lay it flat. Washing it with zips, hooks or anything with a buckle — tassels find them every time. Also hot tumble drying, which shrinks the fringe at a different rate to the body.

When it comes out, run your fingers down the fringe a few times to separate the strands before it dries. That is the whole trick, and it is the step people skip — tassels that dry matted stay matted, and combing them out later is a genuinely tedious evening. Do it wet and it takes twenty seconds.

If a tassel works loose, tie it off at the base rather than trimming into the fringe line.

The sofa stops looking like furniture and starts looking like somewhere to sit.

A living room can be perfectly nice and still look unfinished, and the culprit is almost always a large flat expanse of plain upholstery with nothing on it. You notice it most in photographs. A throw fixes it, but the plain fleece one currently balled up on the armchair does not — it reads as laundry. What changes the room is pattern with an edge treatment, because the fringe gives the throw a defined boundary instead of letting it dissolve into the cushions. This is that: a full mandala across the face, tassels down the ends.

Mandala Tassel Throw Blanket draped over a sofa in use

Tassels are the detail that dates a throw — or saves it

Most throws are cut and hemmed, and a hem is a full stop. It ends the fabric and nothing more. A tasselled edge does something different: it softens the line where the throw meets the sofa, so a draped throw looks arranged rather than dropped. It also solves the practical problem that a plain hem creates, which is that a hemmed edge slides. Weighted fringe gives the ends something to hang from, so a throw over the arm of a chair stays over the arm of the chair instead of creeping to the floor every time someone gets up. The mandala itself does the other half of the work — a large centred motif means the throw looks composed when it is spread flat on a bed, and looks like texture when it is bundled on a couch. Very few patterns manage both.

The three colorways in a room

    • Olive — muted green-grey. From the doorway it reads as texture rather than color, which is why it works in rooms that already have a lot of visual noise. Pairs naturally with rattan, oak and houseplants.
    • Crimson — deep warm red. The loudest of the three and the one that carries a room in winter. Against a cream sofa it is the focal point; against dark grey it warms everything up.
    • Teal — blue-green with real depth. Cool-toned and slightly formal, it is the one that suits a navy or slate palette and looks best where there is warm light — a lamp rather than an overhead.
