What happens the first time somebody spills red wine on it?
A dark, dense floral is the most forgiving surface you can put on a dining table — and this one is a heritage floral and bird design, which is about as busy as pattern gets. That is not decoration for its own sake. It is why the cloth still looks fine at the end of a long dinner.

Blot a spill, do not rub, then rinse the spot under cold running water from the back of the fabric before it dries. Machine wash cool and hang it while damp — the step people skip is taking it out before it is bone dry and letting the weight of the cloth pull the creases out on the line. Do that and you will not need to iron it at all.

A bare dining table is honest about what it is: a flat surface that also holds laptops, post and school bags. The problem is that clearing it does not undo that — you can wipe it down and set it properly and it still reads as the same slab it was an hour ago. Why the birds do more work than the flowers

Putting birds through the pattern breaks the rhythm. They sit at irregular intervals, they face different directions, and they give the eye somewhere specific to land, so the design reads as a scene rather than as wallpaper cut to size. It also means the cloth survives being partly covered. With plates, a board and a bottle on top of it you only ever see fragments of the pattern — and fragments of a scene still look like something, where fragments of a repeat just look interrupted.
