Will a zebra-pattern throw actually work in my room?

There is one version of this blanket, so the only decision is where it goes. The zebra stripe is knitted into the blanket rather than printed on it, which is why it reads as texture from across the room and as pattern up close. That changes which rooms it suits.

Choose it for If this sounds like you
The sofa arm Your living room is beige on beige and every attempt to fix it so far has been another cushion.
The end of the bed You want the bed to look finished without buying a whole new set of bedding.
The reading chair One person in the house is permanently cold and has been stealing the good throw.

A knitted pattern this graphic does most of the work on its own — it does not need a second patterned thing nearby.

How do I keep a knit like this from going baggy?

Knitted throws fail in one of two ways: they stretch out of shape, or they snag. Both are avoidable, and both come down to how you wash it and what it lives next to.

    Works on Avoid
Fabric sofas, upholstered beds, armchairs, the back of a dining chair, folded over an ottoman. Cane and rattan edges, splintery wooden bench slats, velcro, cat claws, and jewellery worn on the wrist while you are wrapped in it. Knits catch on all of them.

Wash cool on a gentle cycle, on its own or with soft items only. Then the step everyone skips: do not hang it up wet. A wet knit hung over a rail will grow several inches at the bottom and stay that way. Lay it flat, pat it back into its rectangle, and let it dry there.

A neutral room with one piece of nerve in it.

Most living rooms get stuck at the same point. The sofa is grey, the rug is grey with a hint of something, the curtains match the wall, and it all looks perfectly tidy and completely uninhabited. Adding another cushion does not fix it. What fixes it is one object with an actual pattern, big enough to see from the doorway, that you can also pull over your legs at nine in the evening. That is the entire job of this throw.

Knitted Zebra Pattern Throw Blanket detail view

    Knitted in, not printed on

This is the part that decides whether the blanket still looks good in three years. A printed pattern sits on the surface, so it cracks along fold lines and goes pale where the sun hits. Here the zebra stripe is built from the knit itself — the light and dark run all the way through the structure, so there is nothing to rub off. It also means the pattern has depth. Stand back and you see bold stripes; sit under it and you see the stitch, the slight ripple where the stripes turn, and the reverse face where the same pattern appears in negative. It is a throw that rewards looking at closely, which most throws do not.

What it does in a room

    • Draped over a sofa arm — the stripes fall into vertical lines and read as a graphic panel rather than a crumpled blanket. This is the arrangement that photographs well.
    • Folded in thirds at the foot of the bed — gives you a wide band of pattern across plain bedding, which is the cheapest way to make a bed look styled.
    • Over the back of a chair — the reverse face shows, so you get the same zebra pattern in inverted tones. Worth turning it over to see which side you prefer.
    • Actually wrapped around a person — which, whatever else it does, is the test any throw has to pass.
