How long should the runner be for my table?
All three are 12" wide, so you are only choosing length — and the rule is simpler than it looks. Measure your table end to end. If you want the pom-poms to hang over the ends, pick a length longer than the table. If you want the runner to sit within the table with bare wood showing at both ends, pick shorter. Both look right; they just look right in different rooms.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| 12"×47" | A coffee table, a console in a hallway, a sideboard, or a small kitchen table for two. Also the one people use down the middle of a chest of drawers. |
| 12"×71" | The standard four-to-six seater dining table. Runs the length of the table with a modest overhang at each end. |
| 12"×87" | A long table, a table with the leaf permanently in, or anyone who wants the pom-poms swinging clear of the table edge rather than resting on it. |
If you are between two, the longer one — an overhang reads as deliberate, a runner that stops eight inches short reads as a mistake.
Jute on a dining table — spills, candles, and washing
Jute is a natural fibre with an open, textured weave, and it wants to be treated like a rug rather than like a napkin. That is a fair trade for the texture you get, but it does change how you use it.
| Works on | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Dining tables, console tables, sideboards, coffee tables, dressers. | A machine wash. Spot clean with a barely damp cloth and let it dry fully. |
| Serving dishes on a trivet or board placed on top of it. | Open candle flames sitting directly on or beside the pom-pom trim. |
| Shaking it out over a bin, or vacuuming it on a low setting. | Soaking a spill, which spreads the mark outwards through the open weave. |
Blot a spill straight away, working from the outside of the mark in, then let it dry flat before it goes back on the table. Working inwards is the step people skip — rubbing outwards on an open weave turns a coin-sized spot into a hand-sized one.
The table stops being a flat brown surface and starts being set.
An empty dining table has a particular deadness to it. It reads as a work surface, so the post lands on it, the laptop lands on it, and dinner happens on a bare slab. A runner down the middle changes the geometry of the room without covering the table you presumably chose on purpose — you still see the wood at the sides, but there is now a line down the centre that says the table is dressed. Pom-poms along the edges add the bit of movement that a plain strip of fabric never manages.

Why jute behaves differently from a woven cotton runner
Cotton runners drape. They follow every ripple in the tablecloth underneath and they slide when someone leans on the table. Jute does neither. It is a stiffer, heavier natural fibre with a coarse spun texture, so the runner lies down flat, holds a straight line down the middle of the table, and stays where you put it when a plate is dragged across it. That is genuinely useful at a dinner table where things get moved constantly.
The texture is the other half of it. Jute has visible fibre and irregular twist, which catches light across the surface the way a smooth printed fabric cannot. Against a polished or painted table it gives you contrast in material, not just in color — which is why the bohemian look works here even in a fairly plain room.
Choosing your length
- 12"×47" — short. For coffee tables, consoles, sideboards and small kitchen tables, where a long runner would hang to the floor.
- 12"×71" — the everyday dining length, with a modest overhang past each end.
- 12"×87" — for long or extended tables, and the one that gives the pom-poms room to hang and swing rather than sit on the edge.
