Twelve lengths — how do I know which one?
Every option is 14" wide, so you only have one number to work out: the length. Measure your table end to end, then add the overhang you want at each end. Twelve inches of drop per end is the classic look; six is the minimal one.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| 14"×39" or 14"×47" | It's not going on a dining table at all — it's for a sideboard, a hall console, or across a coffee table under a candle arrangement. |
| 14"×55" to 14"×71" | A four-seater. Pick the shorter end of that range for no overhang, the longer for a drop at both ends. |
| 14"×79" to 14"×94" | Six seats. The most common holiday-table size, and the one that sells out first every December. |
| 14"×102" to 14"×118" | Eight to ten seats, or an extendable table you open right up once a year. |
| 14"×138" | The long trestle you set up in the hallway or the garage for the whole family, and it needs to run the full length uninterrupted. |
If your table extends, measure it extended. That's the day you'll actually be using this.
Candles, gravy, red wine — will it come out?
A runner sits directly under the centrepiece, which is where the wax and the gravy land. Most of it comes out if you deal with it right, and the wax trick in particular is worth knowing before December.
| Works on | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Dining tables, sideboards, consoles, mantel shelves and coffee tables | Putting a hot serving dish straight down on it — use a trivet |
| Dried candle wax: let it set hard, scrape the bulk off, then press with a warm iron through kitchen paper | Picking at wet wax, which spreads it into the weave |
| Cool gentle machine wash, line dry or tumble low | Bleach on a food stain — it lifts the festive colors faster than the mark |
The step people skip: washing it in early December rather than in January. Put it away clean and next year it comes out of the drawer ready, instead of with last year's dinner still on it.
The table looks like Christmas without covering it up.
Full holiday tablecloths have a problem: they hide the table. If you have a timber table you actually like, draping the whole thing in patterned fabric is a strange way to celebrate. A runner takes the opposite approach — a central band of pattern down the middle, timber showing either side, place settings sitting on the wood. You get the occasion without losing the room, and setting the table takes about ten seconds instead of ironing a six-foot cloth.

Why a 14" width is the number that matters most
Runner width decides whether your table works on the day. Too wide and the place settings end up half on fabric and half on wood, which means every plate rocks slightly and every glass sits at a tilt. Too narrow and the centrepiece overhangs the runner on both sides, so the whole thing looks like an afterthought. Fourteen inches is the width that takes a candle arrangement, a bowl or a row of tealights comfortably down the centre, while leaving clear flat table on either side for plates. It's the reason all twelve lengths here are the same width — the width isn't a preference, it's the part that has to be right.
- 14"×39" and 14"×47" — sideboards, consoles, coffee tables and mantels.
- 14"×55", 14"×63" and 14"×71" — four-seaters, from flush to a proper end drop.
- 14"×79", 14"×87" and 14"×94" — six seats. The workhorse range for a family Christmas dinner.
- 14"×102", 14"×110" and 14"×118" — eight to ten seats, or a fully extended table.
- 14"×138" — the longest. For trestles and banquet setups where a shorter runner would stop halfway and look wrong.
