Which size, and how much drop do you want?

Five of the six sizes are 55" wide, so for most tables you are only picking a length. Measure your table, then add roughly 12 to 20 inches to the length for a drop at each end. With a lace edge you want that drop to be visible — a lace border that stops flat on the table top is a lace border nobody sees.

Choose If this sounds like you
55"×55" A square kitchen table, or a round one where you want the corners to hang down in four points. The size people also use on a small side table by a window.
55"×71" The standard four-seater. If you have a normal dining table and you are not sure, start here.
55"×79" A four-seater where you want more drop, or a slightly longer table that the 71" would only just cover.
55"×87" Six seats, or a table that spends most of its life extended because somebody works at it during the week.
55"×102" A long dining table, or a household where Christmas means both leaves in and chairs borrowed from the hall.
55"×118" A farmhouse table, or two tables pushed end to end for a party and you want one continuous cloth over the join.

If you are between sizes, go longer. A little extra pools softly at the corners; a little too short shows the table legs.

Is lace too delicate for a table people actually eat at?

Lace is fine with food and fine with washing — what it does not tolerate is being snagged and being ironed hot. Nearly every ruined lace cloth was ruined by a wristwatch, a zip in the drum, or an iron set for cotton.

    Fine with this Avoid
Everyday meals, candles in holders, a cool gentle wash on its own, line drying, a cool iron on the plain areas Washing it with anything that has a zip, hook or velcro, hot water, a hot iron directly on the lace, hot dishes straight onto the cloth, rings and watches dragged across the openwork

Practical version: wash it alone, cool and gentle, line dry, and press the plain fabric only. The skipped step is putting it inside a pillowcase or a mesh bag before it goes in the machine — thirty seconds of effort that removes the single most common way a lace cloth gets destroyed.

Sunday lunch starts looking like an occasion again, without anyone doing more work.

There is a version of dinner where everyone eats off a bare table with their phones face-up next to the plates, and a version where the table is laid and nobody quite knows why they lingered afterwards. The cloth is most of that difference. Lace in particular does something no plain cloth manages: the openwork lets the wood tone of the table show faintly through, so the table is still present rather than hidden under a slab of fabric.

Openwork lace is why this works on a dark table as well as a pale one

A solid cloth has to be matched to the room, because it replaces the table surface entirely. Lace does not replace it — it sits over it. The gaps in the pattern pick up whatever is underneath, so the same cloth reads warm over oak, cooler over grey-painted wood, and crisper over glass. That is unusual, and it is the reason a lace cloth tends to survive a house move and a redecoration when a plain one does not.

The blue floral does the other half. Lace on its own can tip into looking like a doily; a defined blue floral pattern gives the cloth structure and stops the whole thing reading as fussy white openwork. It also means the cloth has a clear front and centre, which makes laying the table straightforward — you line the pattern up with the table centre and everything else follows.

    • 55"×55" — square tables, round tables, and side tables that need something over them.
    • 55"×71" — the standard four-seater size and the most common starting point.
    • 55"×79" — a four-seater with a longer drop, or a slightly oversized table.
    • 55"×87" — six seats, or a table that stays extended through the week.
    • 55"×102" — long dining tables and full-house occasions.
    • 55"×118" — farmhouse tables, or two tables joined for a party under one cloth.
