    Which size fits my table?

Measure your tabletop, then add the drop you want on each side — don't buy to the table size alone. A cloth the same size as the table looks like a mistake; 8 to 12 inches of overhang per side is what makes it look like a tablecloth.

Choose If this sounds like you
39"×55" A small kitchen table for two, a console table in a hallway, or a garden bistro table.
55"×55" A square table, or a small round one where you want the cloth to fall evenly all the way round.
55"×71" The standard four-seat dining table. If you're guessing, this is the one most kitchens need.
55"×87" A six-seater, or a four-seater with an extension leaf you leave in most of the time.
55"×102" A long eight-seater, the kind that only fills up at Christmas and birthdays.
55"×118" A full-length farmhouse table, or two trestles pushed together for a party.
60"×144" The biggest table in the house, a hired banquet table, or a buffet run along a wall.

If you're between two sizes, size up. A cloth that's slightly too long looks generous; one that's slightly too short looks borrowed.

What happens when someone knocks over a glass of red?

The difference between a stain and a memory is what you do in the first two minutes. Everything else about looking after a tablecloth is easy.

    Works Avoid
Blotting a spill straight away with a dry cloth, rinsing the back of the fabric under a cold tap, cool machine washing, ironing on the reverse while slightly damp, folding over a hanger instead of into a drawer. Rubbing a spill in, hot water on anything protein- or wine-based, bleach on a patterned cloth, hot tumble drying, leaving it crumpled in the machine overnight.

Blot, don't rub, and rinse from the underside so the stain is pushed back out of the weave rather than deeper into it. Rinsing from the front is the step nearly everyone gets wrong, and it's why a spill that could have vanished ends up as a permanent pale ring.

The dining table stops being where the post lands.

A bare dining table is an invitation to put things down on it. Keys, laptop, a stack of envelopes, the box that hasn't been unpacked. Nobody decides to do this, it just happens, and then meals move to the sofa. A tablecloth resets the whole surface — it takes ten seconds to put on, and once it's there the table reads as a table again. It's a psychological trick more than a decorative one, and it works every time.

Why the pattern is what makes it usable

A plain white tablecloth is a beautiful thing that spends most of its life in a cupboard, because a single drip of olive oil is visible from the doorway. That's not a fault in the cloth, it's a fault in the plan. An all-over pattern breaks up the surface, so the small marks that come with actually eating at a table — a crumb of sauce, a water ring, a smear of butter — don't announce themselves halfway through dinner.

Which means the cloth stays on the table. And a tablecloth that stays on the table earns its keep: it protects the wood underneath from heat, scratches and cup rings, it softens the acoustic clatter of plates and cutlery, and it stops the table itself needing to be beautiful. The cottage pattern is doing the decorative job so the surface can do the practical one.

    Where each length actually goes

    • 39"×55" and 55"×55" — the small pair. Kitchen tables for two, square tables, hall consoles, or a garden table you dress for lunch and clear by evening.
    • 55"×71" and 55"×87" — the everyday sizes. These fit the four- and six-seat tables most homes actually own, with a proper drop over the ends.
    • 55"×102" and 55"×118" — the entertaining sizes. Long enough for eight or more, and the ones to buy if your table has leaves that only come out for Christmas.
    • 60"×144" — the banquet length, and slightly wider than the rest. For farmhouse tables, buffet runs and hired trestles, where nothing shorter reaches the ends.
