Which size — throw, or actual bed cover?
Decide where it is going to live before you pick, because these three sizes do genuinely different jobs. Same chessboard grid across all of them; the scale of the squares is what changes how the pattern reads at each size.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| 39"×59" | One person on the sofa with their feet tucked under. Also the one that gets folded over the arm of a chair and left there as the room's only pattern. |
| 59"×79" | Two people watching something, or one tall person who is tired of a blanket that covers their shoulders or their feet but never both. |
| 79"×91" | It is going on the bed. Wide enough to sit over a double or queen with the pattern lying flat rather than disappearing into the sides. |
If it is for the bed, do not buy the middle size hoping. It will look like a napkin on a table.
Will the dark squares fade or shed onto everything?
A high-contrast pattern lives or dies on the first three washes. Treat it right at the start and the black stays black instead of drifting to charcoal.
| Works | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Cool gentle machine wash on its own for the first wash, mild detergent, tumble dry low or line dry in shade | Bleach and stain removers, hot water, a hot dryer, and drying it in full sun — direct sun is the fastest way to flatten a dark colorway |
Practical order: wash alone the first time, shake it out hard while damp so the weave opens back up, then dry low. Spot-clean small marks rather than washing the whole thing every time.
The step people skip: shaking it out before drying. A blanket that goes into the dryer folded in on itself comes out with a permanent crease line straight through the grid.
The sofa stops looking like a sofa with a blanket on it and starts looking like it was planned.
Most throws are a solid block of color that either matches the couch and vanishes, or clashes with it and gets folded into a cupboard. Either way the room ends up with no pattern in it at all, which is why living rooms full of nice furniture can still look strangely flat.
A chessboard grid fixes that in one object. It is regular enough not to fight anything else in the room, and graphic enough that a plain grey sofa suddenly has something going on.

Why a woven grid behaves differently to a printed one
The chessboard here is built into the weave rather than printed on the face, and that changes how it looks in a room. A woven square catches light differently depending on the direction its threads run, so the pattern shifts slightly as you walk past it — the dark squares go matte or glossy depending on your angle. A printed grid is flat from every position.
It also matters on a draped blanket, which is how a blanket actually lives. Thrown over an arm, folded at the foot of a bed, bunched around someone on the couch — the grid distorts across the folds, and a woven pattern follows the fabric into those curves. A print sitting on the surface just creases.
Which colorway does what to a room
- Black — the sharpest of the four and the most graphic. Best in a room that already has hard edges: dark metal, leather, a plain white wall it can sit against.
- Yellow — the one people buy when the living room has gone entirely beige and needs an argument. Reads warm at night under lamplight rather than acidic.
- Brown — the quietest. The contrast between squares is lower, so from across the room it reads as texture and only resolves into a grid up close. Good over a tan or cream sofa.
- Navy Blue — the safe grown-up choice. Cool enough to sit with grey without going flat, dark enough to hide a week of use before you notice.
