Shape first, then size — how do I get the drop right?
Pick the Shape that matches your table, then take your tabletop measurement and add roughly twice the overhang you want. For Rectangular the sizes are given as width by length; for Round they are given as a single diameter figure.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| Rectangular — 55"×71" | A small rectangular kitchen table for four, or a sideboard you want dressed for Christmas without fabric pooling on the floor. |
| Rectangular — 55"×87" | The standard six-seat dining table. Covers the top with a decent drop at both ends rather than a mean little hem. |
| Rectangular — 71"×102" | A long table for eight or more, or a table with the leaf in for a proper sit-down where you want velvet falling over the corners. |
| Round — 55" | A small round table, a pedestal table in a bay window, or a side table you want draped nearly to the floor. |
| Round — 71" | A full round dining table that seats six, where you want the cloth to hang below the table edge on every side. |
When you are between two sizes, take the bigger one. Velvet looks expensive when it drapes and cheap when it stops short.
Velvet on a dining table — is that a mistake?
Velvet has a pile, and pile has a direction, which is the one thing people are not expecting. Get that right and it is far more forgiving on a table than it sounds.
| Works | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Brushing the pile one way with your hand after laying it, a light steam held above the fabric to release fold lines, gentle cool wash, air dry out of sun | A hot iron pressed on the face, which crushes the pile flat for good; bleach; hot tumble drying; and setting hot serving dishes straight onto the cloth |
How to set it: unfold, shake, lay it centred, then run a flat palm across the whole surface in one consistent direction. The pile lying uniformly is what makes the olive look deep and even rather than patchy.
The step people skip: steaming from the back, not the front. If you must press fold lines out, do it from the underside with the pile face down on a towel.
The table stops being furniture for one evening and starts being the reason people take a photo before they sit down.
A dinner that matters usually gets the same treatment as a Tuesday: bare wood, maybe some mats, the visible ring where someone put a glass down in 2019. You light a candle and hope. The table is doing none of the work.
A deep olive velvet cloth changes the whole room in one move, because it is the largest single surface in it. Wood goes from the main event to the thing under the cloth, and the glassware suddenly has something to sit against.

Why velvet does something no other tablecloth does
Velvet is woven with a raised pile of short fibres standing up off the base cloth. Because those fibres stand rather than lie flat, they catch light on their tips and hold shadow at their roots — so a single color reads as two or three tones across one surface, shifting as you move around the table. That is the reason olive velvet looks like a deep forest green from one end and a soft warm sage from the other.
The pile also gives the cloth weight and body. It hangs over a table edge in a heavy, square fall rather than fluttering, so the corners stay put when someone leans on them. And it deadens sound: plates and cutlery land with a dull note instead of a clatter, which is a small thing you notice all evening.
Choosing your shape
- Rectangular — the formal option. Corners hang in defined points and the long sides give you a continuous fall of velvet down the length of the table. This is the shape for a seated dinner, and the one that looks most like a set stage when candles run down the middle.
- Round — softer and more enveloping. The cloth falls in an even circular drape with no corners to catch, which makes it the better choice for a table people walk around, and the one that turns a pedestal or side table into something that looks almost skirted.
