Which length fits my table?
Measure the tabletop, then decide how much overhang you want at each end. A runner that stops flush with the edge looks unfinished; six to eight inches hanging over each end is the look most people are picturing.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| 11"×17" | Not a runner at all — a mat. Buy several to set individual places, or use one under a centrepiece on a side table or hall console. |
| 16"×33" | A small square table, a coffee table, or a sideboard where you want something under the lamp and the bowl of keys. |
| 14"×69" | The standard four-to-six seater. Runs the length with a bit spare, and still leaves room for plates on either side. |
| 14"×87" | A long table that seats eight or more, or a table with a leaf you put in when people come over. |
Table with rounded ends? Go a size down. The overhang goes strange on a curve.
Is this only good for three weeks in November?
The leaves are embroidered rather than seasonal-printed, which is the difference between a fall decoration and a table runner that has leaves on it. There is no orange gourd imagery and nothing that dates it to a specific holiday.
| Works on | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Bare wood tables, glass, stone or laminate tops, sideboards, consoles — anywhere the surface underneath is plain and you want a line down the middle of it | Over a patterned tablecloth, and directly under a dish straight out of the oven — use a trivet rather than trusting the fabric |
Care: gentle cool wash, warm iron on the reverse only, and deal with spills quickly rather than letting them sit. The step people skip is ironing face-down. Press the embroidery directly and you flatten the raised stitching that made you buy it — iron from the back and the leaves stay proud.
A bare dining table that looks set even when nobody is eating.
Most dining tables spend the majority of their life empty, collecting a laptop, a pile of post and one abandoned mug. A runner is the cheapest thing that reverses that. It draws a line down the centre, gives the surface a purpose, and makes the difference between a table that is being used as a desk and one that is waiting for dinner. Then when people do arrive, you are already most of the way to a set table — add plates and you are done.

Embroidery is what stops it looking cheap under a light
Overhead dining lights are unforgiving. They rake across a table surface at exactly the angle that exposes a printed pattern for what it is — flat ink on flat cloth, with the weave visible straight through it. Embroidered leaves behave the opposite way under the same light: the raised stitching catches it and casts its own small shadows, so the design has depth from every seat at the table rather than only from directly above.
It also holds up better to the actual life of a dining table. Print sits on the fibers and gets scrubbed thinner every time you get a wine ring out. Stitching is worked into the cloth, so wiping and washing take nothing off it. The leaves on this will look the same after a year of Sunday lunches as they do out of the packaging.
The four sizes, in practice
- 11"×17" — Place-mat scale. Best in a set, or solo under a vase.
- 16"×33" — Short and comparatively wide. Suits square tables and sideboards, where a long runner would look odd.
- 14"×69" — The everyday dining length. Narrow enough that place settings still work either side.
- 14"×87" — For long tables. The size that makes a big table look considered instead of empty.
