Which size sits right on my bed?
Gauze drapes rather than sits, so err larger than you think. A stiff quilt holds a square shape on top of a mattress. This one falls over the sides, which means a few inches of extra width read as a lot more coverage.
| Choose | If this sounds like you |
|---|---|
| 59"×79" | One person on a sofa, a single bed, or a summer cover you throw over yourself on the daybed and take to the beach when it stops being a bed thing. |
| 71"×79" | Two people on a queen who want it to cover both without one of you waking up uncovered at 3am. Sits neatly with a short drop on each side. |
| 79"×91" | A king, or a queen where you want proper draped sides and a bed that looks made even when it is not. |
Cotton gauze relaxes and shrinks slightly on the first wash. If you are between two sizes, take the bigger one.
Is a gauze blanket warm enough to be worth having?
It is not a winter blanket, and pretending otherwise would be a waste of your money. What it does is regulate — layers of loose-woven cotton trap a little air and let the rest move through, so you get covered without getting hot.
| Right for | Not right for |
|---|---|
| Warm nights, hot sleepers, air-conditioned bedrooms, a top layer over a duvet in winter, sofa naps, the spare room, anywhere the temperature swings between midnight and dawn | A cold room with no heating and nothing else on the bed, or anyone shopping for the weight of a sherpa or a quilt |
Wash cool on gentle, tumble low, and take it out while it is still slightly damp. The step people skip is that last part — gauze is meant to look crinkled, and over-drying bakes hard creases into it rather than the soft crumple you want. Do not iron it flat. Ironing removes the entire point.
The blanket that stops the middle-of-the-night kick-off-then-pull-back-on routine.
You know the cycle. You get into bed under something heavy, wake up too warm around two, push it off, and wake up cold an hour later. A gauze blanket breaks it, because it never gets to the point of being too much. Layers of open-woven cotton sit over you with enough presence that you feel covered — which is most of what the brain is asking for — without stacking up heat. In August it is the only thing on the bed. In January it goes over the duvet and stops it sliding off.

Why gauze gets better and most textiles get worse
Cotton gauze is woven loose on purpose and then allowed to shrink and crinkle. That is why a new one feels slightly crisp and a two-year-old one feels like a well-worn shirt. Each wash relaxes the weave further, so the blanket you have in a year will be softer than the one that arrives, and the one you have in five will be the one you fight over. Very few things in a house improve on that curve.
The reversible construction matters for a practical reason as well as a decorative one. Two faces means two looks from one blanket — flip it when the room changes or when you have simply had enough of one side — and it means the wear gets shared. A blanket used on one face only develops a tired side. This one does not.
Sizing in the room
- 59"×79" — Throw proportions. Lives on the sofa, folds into a basket, travels well.
- 71"×79" — The queen-bed size. Covers the sleeping surface with a modest drop rather than pooling on the floor.
- 79"×91" — The generous one. Real drape down both sides, and the size to choose if you like a bed that looks layered.
