Put a candle in an ordinary holder and you get a flame. Put it in this lantern and you get the room: every side is cut through with a geometric star pattern, so the light leaves in hundreds of small shapes and lands on the table, the wall and the ceiling around it.
It's styled after the pierced metal lanterns of Moroccan souks — a square body, a domed, pierced roof and a ring on top — in a worn antique bronze finish that looks like it's already been in the family a while. Set it on the Thanksgiving table, beside the front door on a covered porch, or on the coffee table on a long winter evening with the lamps turned off.

Pierced iron, antique bronze finish
The lantern is made from iron with a distressed antique bronze finish — dark at the edges, with brushed gold showing through. A hinged door on the front opens with a small hook latch so you can place and light the candle, and the ring on top lets you carry it. Use a small pillar candle, a tealight or an LED candle inside. Wipe clean with a damp cloth.
