    How many should I get?

There is only one version, so there is no wrong choice to make here. The only real question is whether one press is enough for the way you cook, or whether a second one earns its drawer space.

Choose If this sounds like you
One Garlic goes in most weeknight dinners, one or two cloves at a time, and it gets rinsed straight after. This covers you.
Two You batch-cook on Sundays and get through half a bulb in one sitting, or you want one that stays permanently on ginger duty so your garlic press does not smell like a curry.

Two presses also means you are not stopping mid-recipe to wash the one you own.

Do I have to peel the garlic first? And how bad is it to clean?

No peeling needed for ordinary cloves, and the cleaning takes about ten seconds if you do it at the right moment. The chamber is drilled with small holes, so the flesh goes through and the skin stays behind in one flat disc you lift out and bin.

    Works on Avoid
Garlic cloves, peeled or unpeeled. Fresh ginger cut into thumbnail-sized pieces. Small shallots, halved. Soft roasted garlic when you want a paste. Frozen garlic straight from the freezer. Dried or shrivelled cloves that have gone woody in the middle. Nutmeg, whole spices, or anything you would need a hammer for.

Cleaning, in order: open the hinge fully, push the skin disc out, then rinse under a hot tap while the pulp is still wet. The step almost everyone skips is the rinse-now part. Leave it on the bench until after dinner and the garlic dries into cement in the holes, and then you are standing there with a toothpick. It is also dishwasher safe if you would rather not think about it at all.

Garlic in the pan in eight seconds, and a board you do not have to scrub.

The reason people quietly stop cooking with fresh garlic is not the taste. It is the three minutes of smashing a clove with the flat of a knife, peeling the sticky skin off your fingers, chopping it unevenly so half of it burns before the rest softens, and then a chopping board and a knife that smell of garlic through two washes. This replaces all of that with one squeeze over the pan. The clove goes in whole, the pressed garlic comes out the other side in even threads that cook at the same rate, and your hands never touch it.

Why the handle matters more than the chamber

Every garlic press has holes. What separates the ones that last from the ones that end up in a drawer is the hinge and the grip. Cheap presses put a thin pivot under a lot of leverage, and the arms splay outward the first time you load a big clove, which is why people end up pressing with two hands and a grimace. This one is stainless steel through the body, so the pressure goes into the garlic rather than into flexing metal, and the non-slip handle gives your palm something to push against when your hands are wet from rinsing herbs. It is a small thing until you are cooking for six and pressing eight cloves in a row.

Stainless also means garlic does not stain it and lemon juice does not pit it, so it looks the same in year three as it did the day it arrived.

    • Brushed stainless steel — the only finish there is, and the reason the product is called minimalist. No plastic panels, no branded logo across the handle, nothing to discolor. It sits in a drawer with steel tongs and a peeler and looks like it belongs, and it does not look out of place left on the counter next to a gas hob either.

    What You're Getting

    • One garlic press in brushed stainless steel, with the non-slip handle section moulded onto the grip arms
    • Perforated pressing chamber that takes a whole clove, peeled or not, and separates the skin as one piece
    • Hinged arm design that opens flat so you can clear the chamber without picking at it
    • Handles ginger too — cut a thumbnail-sized piece and it presses to a pulp, no grating
    • Dishwasher safe, top rack, hinge open
    • Rinse immediately after use while the pulp is wet — this is the whole maintenance routine
    • No plastic in the pressing path, so nothing to stain or hold onto smell
    • Fits a standard utensil drawer and hangs from a rail if you keep tools on the wall
