Fall 2026 is cinnamon, chocolate and one piece with age

Antique Gold Vase

The Journal · Décor · September 2026

This year the trend pieces agree: orange-leaning browns, chunky texture, and one object in the room that looks like it came from somewhere. Three changes, then stop.

The fall trend pieces from Homes & Gardens and Living Spaces agree on more than they usually do. The colours are orange-leaning browns, cinnamon, terracotta and chocolate. The textures are chunky knit, velvet, boucle and woven. And the overall direction is rooms that look collected over time rather than bought in one go: vintage-looking pieces, dark wood, things with a bit of age on them.

That's a useful brief, because most of it can be done with three or four things and none of it needs paint.

01

Start at the window

The fastest way to change the temperature of a room, visually, is the curtains. A neutral room with white blinds reads cold in October. The same room with a floral tapestry curtain in green and rose reads finished. The French Vintage Floral Tapestry Curtain is the one people buy in pairs, and the Bloom Green and Autumn Floral colourways sit exactly in this year's palette. It's a dense weave, so the print has depth in low light, which is when you'll be looking at it.

02

One piece with age

The trend pieces all say “vintage-inspired” and mean “one thing in the room that looks like it came from somewhere”. The Antique Gold Vase does this job on a console or a mantel with a handful of dried stems in it. It's solid metal with a hand-aged finish, heavy enough that a full armful of pampas doesn't tip it, and it reads as found rather than bought. Two sizes; the Slim is the one for a narrow console.

03

Texture over the sofa

Chunky knit is the texture of the season and a throw is the cheapest way to get it. The Sherpa Fleece Throw in Dark Mocha or Oat Latte is the cinnamon-brown end of the palette; Matcha Mist is the green. If the sofa itself is the problem, the Herringbone Sofa Cover in Ivory Dune puts a woven, tasselled surface over the whole thing and hides a decade of wear.

04

What to leave alone

Skip anything with the word “fall” printed on it. The rooms that look good in October are the ones that would also look good in February, just warmer. Change the curtains, add one throw and one object with weight, and stop.
